  • 5 Best Laundry Detergents to Avoid Toxic Ingredients, According to a Breast Cancer Survivor

After surviving breast cancer, I became much more conscious about the products I use in my home, especially the ones that come into contact with my body every single day. This may be surprising to some, but one of the biggest things I started paying attention to was laundry detergent.

Most people don’t realize that detergent chemicals don’t just disappear in the wash. They stay on your clothes, towels, and bedding, sitting against your skin day and night. That’s why I started looking more closely at ingredients commonly found in detergents, like 1,4-dioxane (which the EPA says is likely carcinogenic), ethoxylated ingredients, synthetic dyes, optical brighteners, SLS/SLES, parabens, phosphates, sulfates, and more.

I tested several different laundry detergent brands in my home to find options I felt better about using to reduce cancer risk for myself and my family. These were the 5 best.

TLDR: CLEAN PEOPLE Laundry Detergent came in #1 because its cleans well, uses plastic-free packaging, has no 1,4 dioxane, SLS/SLES, parabens, phosphates, sulfates, synthetic dyes, and no optical brighteners!  I use Clean People in my home and love it.

    1. CLEAN PEOPLE Laundry Detergent

    Clean People Laundry Detergent

Clean People Laundry Detergent blew me away and was my favorite laundry detergent by far, earning 5 stars ★★★★★. It is effective at cleaning and eliminating odors – my husband and I washed sweaty gym clothes and kids clothes with stains. All the clothes came out fresh and clean. In other words, it works!

Clean People uses simple, effective ingredients, and doesn’t contain harsh chemicals like 1,4 dioxane (a known carcinogen), optical brighteners, sulfates, phosphates, parabens, chlorine, or synthetic dyes. That’s why it’s hypoallergenic and certified by Dermatologists.

As someone who’s hyper-aware of the potential cancer risks linked to ingredients commonly found in mainstream laundry detergents, I loved being able to actually read and recognize every ingredient on the label.

Finally, I loved all the great reviews that Clean People has earned, including one from me!

Clean People comes in Fragrance Free and Fresh & Clean Scent.  I love the Fragrance Free option, but our favorite is Fresh & Clean!

This is what I recommend and use at home and thus earned the #1 spot.

    2. Thieves
    Seventh Generation

Thieves earned my #2 spot.  Like #1 Clean People, Thieves is made from simple, effective ingredients.  While Clean People is a laundry sheet, Thieves is liquid laundry.  I love that it is easy to pour. Thieves offers strong cleaning power with cleaner ingredients and performed well on all my laundry.  Thieves comes in an amazing spicy aroma.

The combination of cleaning power, non-cancerous ingredients, and little plastic earned Thieves my #2 spot.

    3. Seventh Generation
    Charlie's Soap Fragrance Free

Seventh Generation came in 3rd place. Free & Clear is a fragrance free formula.  Seventh Generation did well at cleaning and removing odors.  Seventh Generation uses simple, effective ingredients and is hypoallergenic.  However, Seventh Generation’s ingredients include ingredients that we don’t like.  First off, Free & Clear includes SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate) which can cause rashes and harm your skin.  Additionally, the detergent includes preservatives (methylisothiazolinone and benzisothiazolinone) that are known to cause extreme allergic reactions in some people.

The plastic laundry detergent bottles are made mostly from recycled plastic which we like.  But plastic laundry detergent bottles often end up in the landfill.

We loved the cleanliness.  But the 1,4 dioxane & plastic bottle dropped Seventh Generation to our #3 spot.

    4. Mrs. Myers
    Dirty Labs Fragrance Free

Mrs. Myers came in 4th place.  Mrs. Myers is what you think of when you think of clean Laundry Detergent.  It has pleasant, garden-inspired scents, plant-derived ingredients, enzymes for cleaning, concentration (little goes a long way), and cruelty-free status. It does have methylisothiazolinone which is a potential allergen and knocked it lower on my list.

We did love the scent and cleaning power, and based on the thousands of reviews that the product has on Amazon, so did many others.

    5. Dirty Labs
    Babyganics

Great product! And I love their aluminum containers (aluminum is infinitely recyclable which makes it an environmentally friendly option) but it is too expensive to make it make sense.

  • 5 Best Laundry Detergents For Sensitive Skin

If you struggle with sensitive skin, your laundry detergent could be part of the problem. Most people don’t realize that detergent doesn’t fully rinse out…it stays trapped in your clothes, towels, and bedding, sitting against your skin all day long. That irritation, itchiness, dryness, or random rash you can’t figure out? It could actually be coming from what you wash your clothes in.

The good news: switching to a fragrance-free or “free & clear” detergent is a super simple change that can make a noticeable difference for sensitive skin.

Here are five options worth considering, starting with our top pick.

    1. Clean People Fragrance Free

    Clean People Laundry Detergent

Clean People Fragrance Free is built around one core idea: clean clothes shouldn’t come with unnecessary ingredients that irritate your skin.

Instead of adding dyes, synthetic fragrance, or fillers, it keeps the formula simple and intentional. It’s designed to clean effectively without leaving behind residues that sit on your fabrics and skin all day. The ingredient profile is straightforward, lab-tested, and intentionally minimal. For people focused on reducing daily chemical exposure while still wanting strong performance, it’s an easy upgrade. If you’re trying to reduce exposure, keep your sensitive skin safe, all without sacrificing performance, this is one of the easiest changes you can make.

    2. Seventh Generation Free & Clear
    Seventh Generation

Seventh Generation is one of the most widely recognized names in “cleaner” household products.

Their Free & Clear detergent has been a staple for years. It avoids dyes and added fragrance while focusing on plant-based ingredients, avoiding all the common skin irritants found in other detergents. It’s widely available in major retailers, making it an accessible option for many households. Some consumers appreciate the brand’s sustainability focus, though ingredient transparency discussions continue in the clean-product space. Some consumers feel the ingredients are still pretty complex, even if they aren’t as harsh on skin as other detergents.

    3. Charlie’s Fragrance-Free
    Charlie's Soap Fragrance Free

A widely available fragrance-free option with familiar cleaning performance.

Charlie’s fragrance-free version is one of the most well-known options in the cleaner laundry space. It focuses on a simplified formula designed to clean effectively without added skin-irritating dyes or perfumes. Many users appreciate its long-standing reputation and loyal following in the minimal-detergent category. Performance feedback can vary depending on stain level and lifestyle needs.

For people with sensitive skin who want a simpler, more minimal detergent, this is often a solid option.

    4. Dirty Labs Fragrance-Free
    Dirty Labs Fragrance Free

Dirty Labs takes a more premium, science-forward approach to laundry.

Their fragrance-free option emphasizes enzyme-driven cleaning technology while avoiding synthetic fragrance. The brand positions itself as eco-focused and ingredient-conscious, appealing to consumers who like a modern feel without the added irritants. It’s often priced at a premium level and may not be as widely available in all retail stores.

It’s a good fit if you want something that feels elevated but still aligns with safer standards.

    5. Babyganics Fragrance-Free Laundry Detergent
    Babyganics

Popular choice for families and sensitive skin households.

Babyganics is a go-to for families—especially those thinking about what touches their baby’s skin. Formulated without added fragrance or dyes, it’s designed with sensitive skin in mind. Many parents trust the brand for everyday laundry, though some note it carries a slight premium compared to standard free & clear options.

Even if you don’t have kids, this type of formula is a strong option for anyone wanting a gentler detergent.

Why Your Laundry Detergent Choice Actually Matters if you have Sensitive Skin:

Across all of these options, one thing is consistent: less is more.

    • “Fragrance” can represent dozens of hidden chemicals
    • Detergent residue stays in your clothes (and on your skin)
    • You’re exposed daily — through clothing, bedding, and towels

Clean clothes don’t need a scent. They just need to be clean.

    Final Thoughts

You don’t have to overhaul your entire lifestyle to make better choices for your skin. Switching your laundry detergent is a small change—but it’s one you feel every single day. Clean isn’t a smell—it’s what’s left behind.
